Tom Maisey - The Music Project

About

Tom Maisey is a designer and musician whose practice explores the powerful relationship between sound, memory and human connection. As Director of The Music Project, he has spent over two decades working across the field of design, developing a diverse body of work that spans product innovation, creative technology and socially engaged practice. His projects range from experimental studio-based exploration to collaborative research and real-world applications, with a focus on meaningful impact.

At the heart of Tom’s work is a deeply human-centred approach, shaped by curiosity, empathy, and a belief in design as a tool for care. In recent years, his practice has focused on creating music-based products and experiences for individuals living with dementia. He is particularly interested in the unique ability of music to unlock recognition, evoke emotion and foster moments of comfort and reconnection. His work seeks to gently support wellbeing and dignity through thoughtfully designed interventions.

Collaboration is fundamental to Tom’s practice. He has worked alongside organisations such as the Alzheimer’s Society, as well as researchers, healthcare professionals and communities, to explore how creativity and sound can enrich dementia care. Through these partnerships, he continues to develop innovative approaches that blend design rigour with artistic sensitivity. Tom’s practice sits at the intersection of design, music and social purpose, creating objects and experiences that go beyond function — inviting joy, remembrance and connection through sound.
